Guitar Hero

This is a picture of the guitar hero cake that I did this weekend. I was pretty happy with it since it was a rush order.

Weekend adventures

Wow, Christmas is close!!! Time to start holiday baking now that I've finished the current cake orders. These are the two cakes I did this weekend. I loved the lab coat cake. I also loved the Tiffany style babtism cake but the ride to Markham from Hamilton did some harm to the middle tier. Lucky for me it was on the back so it wasn't visible but I was so disappointed and stressed since it was perfect when I left. Lesson learned. Warm car, cold day, then cold car, does not work well with fondant.

Sugar high

Wow, last night was great! We tasted about 13 different icing flavours and had to guess what each one was. I thought I would be pretty good at that game (icing and flavours being a particular passion of mine said the overweight baker!) but I was terrible!!! So many different flavours and the electric blue colour of the icing certainly threw me. The upshot is that I think I got two out of thirteen! Some tasted great, think butterscotch and almond, and some were truly heinous! Well to me anyway! Apple? ick, Pistachio? Another big ick! But a truly interesting experience reminding us that just because something might sound tasty, until you actually eat it you have no clue!
Thanks Lynne for that informative night!

Halloween

Last weekend being Halloween, I had an order for Harry Potter's sorting hat. The little girl's class was studying Harry Potter in English class and to cap it off they had a Harry Potter themed party! School is way cooler now than when I went!

First birthdays everywhere!

My nephew Andrew turned one last weekend and my sister-in-law asked for a sheet cake with a couple of his favourite things. Sophie and the remote control! Andrew got his first taste of birthday cake and we've discovered he has a huge sweet tooth! Happy birthday Chuckie!
Last weekend I picked up a last minute order for a first birthday in Mississauga. Design credit for the number one and the stars goes to the London Cake Company in the U.K. This was recreated from a picture on their web-site. Hopefully Ethan had a great first birthday!

Credit deserved!

Here is another view of the Alice Cake. Also I must give credit where credit is due! The design for this cake came from a picture that the client printed off the internet. The original was made by "Jane the Cake Lady" from Connecticut. Sorry for any infringement!

Finally! I finished the Alice in Wonderland cake! It wasn't completely the way that I wanted it but it was adequate! I hope that Sam loves it and that her birthday party is incredible!
This cake was fun to make if for no other reason than I got to "play" with tons of fondant! Grown up playdough!
Here a couple of pictures of the finished product and when Sam has a picture of herself with the cake I'll post that! I have to say the mouse in the teapot was my favourite element!

Cakes and Kids

So I'm finally adding some of my new "creations". It's been a busy time but I love it. I'd love to be busier still! However, right now, with two sick kids at home and the school and friends paranoid about H1N1 I'll just have to go with the flow.

My new toy!

I just bought an air compressor and need to now buy an airbrush. I would have thought that when I explained to the sales lady what I needed it for she would have asked if I needed the airbrush as well, but c'est la vie! I can't wait to try it on my cakes and especially the fondant!

Got great positive feedback about the two cakes for last weekend which was so nice! So often you send your creations off and never know how they were received!

On a different note, I phoned the school that I wanted to switch the kids to and it's a moot point. They are full to capacity. So, unfortunately, our sweet babies will be returning to the worst school in Ontario. And that's not just an opinion. That has been proven by the CD Howe institute. Just wanted to clarify that I'm not just a hater! lol

Thank goodness the cakes are done and delivered! The double decker bus cake was sort of bland but I couldn't come up with anything to liven it up! The golf bag cake was almost the death of me what with the crumbling, remaking, and struggling with the design I felt like I was on an episode of Cake Boss! I wish! lol
Now on to making my husband Scott's birthday cake! Go Packers!

Another day baking

Almost done my Double Decker Bus cake and about to start the golf bag cake. Pictures will follow.

Here is my first "professional" cake.
